CarCostCanada's April 2018 Top 10 Vehicles Sold Report

Canada's Top 10 Selling New Cars

The decline in passenger car sales continues unabated. Year to date passenger car sales are just over 19,000 units short of last years count. Light truck sales are just over 5% greater than last years tally for the first four months of the year. These numbers result in year to date total being less than 1% greater than last year. We might expect new vehicle incentives to be greater going into the end of the 2018 model year production schedule. Compared to the same period last year, all of the top six selling manufacturers saw their sales decline during April 2018. Fiat Chrysler suffered the largest decline of all manufacturers. Nissan Group and VW Group posted the largest year over year increases in sales. Fiat Chrysler saw their overall sales decline just over nine percent. VW Group and Toyota posted the largest increases in sales compared to March 2017, with VW posting an increase of over twenty two percent. While GM sales lagged Ford by 501 units during April 2018, GM maintained an lead of 3418 units for the four months ending on April 30. Last year at this time, GM trailed Ford by almost one thousand units and it was just barely ahead of Fiat Chrysler. At least for now; GM has pulled ahead of Ford by a measurable margin, and it has left Fiat Chrysler behind. At least for now.
