Buying a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, and saving $500 off of MSRP.
I found out on this particular model mark up percentage is low, so felt comfortable negotiating for not much below list price.

I used the wholesale price just to know when the dealer was offering me a reasonable price. The only complaint about the dealer that I had was that they were a little less than honest about what they were doing with my trade, and when I told them to make the payment a certain number, the sales rep came back and said "Congratulations, we have a deal" even though it was still off by about $150 on the total price. But I was still pleased with the price - until two months later when 0% financing came out on my car, and now it also has a $2000 cash-back incentive... so I've actually ended up overpaying by $4700 because I bought it 4 months too soon. My own fault I guess.

Be up front with them letting them know you are working up from dealer cost as opposed to down from MSRP. Show them the report and let them validate the wholesale price.
