{"id":2896,"date":"2020-04-07T22:59:25","date_gmt":"2020-04-08T02:59:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/articles.carcostcanada.com\/?p=2896"},"modified":"2025-03-07T09:26:54","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T14:26:54","slug":"porsche-develops-special-3d-printed-seats-for-911-and-718-race-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/articles.carcostcanada.com\/porsche-develops-special-3d-printed-seats-for-911-and-718-race-customers\/","title":{"rendered":"Porsche develops special 3D-printed seats for 911 and 718 race customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2899\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2899\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2899\" src=\"https:\/\/articles.carcostcanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/inline_porsche_3d_printed_seats_00100.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 3D-printed bodyform full-bucket seat\" width=\"200\" height=\"132\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2899\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Porsche&#8217;s new 3D-printed bodyform full-bucket seat can potentially provide custom-fitted seating for road-going cars.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Using a 3D printer for parts production in the auto industry is hardly novel these days, but 3D printing exactly fitted customizable car seats is quite innovative, or will be as soon as they\u2019re being done for Porsche road cars. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The automaker\u2019s Porsche Tequipment division will be producing 40 prototype examples of its new \u201c3D-printed bodyform full-bucket seat\u201d for some of its Europe-based series-production <a href=\"https:\/\/carcostcanada.com\/Canada\/Prices\/2020-Porsche-911\/32266\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">911<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carcostcanada.com\/Canada\/Prices\/2020-Porsche-718_Cayman\/32829\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">718<\/a> race car clients to be delivered in May of this year, and after that it could very well transition into a new road car personalization program. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2900\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2900\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2900\" src=\"https:\/\/articles.carcostcanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/inline_porsche_3d_printed_seats_00200.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 3D-printed bodyform full-bucket seat\" width=\"200\" height=\"112\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new seats provide a wholly unique look that also provides natural backside ventilation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The prototype seats will be six-point seatbelt equipped race buckets the automaker refers to as \u201cbodyform\u201d seats, and after incorporating design changes brought about by its racecar clients\u2019 feedback, will be making custom-fitted road car variants via its Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur division from the mid-point of 2021. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The road-going seats will be available in soft, medium and hard firmness levels as well as various colours, the latter allowing customers to match their cars\u2019 interior to Porsche\u2019s currently available \u201cSpecial\u201d colour schemes as well as their clients\u2019 \u201cCustom Colour\u201d requests. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2901\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2901\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2901\" src=\"https:\/\/articles.carcostcanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/inline_porsche_3d_printed_seats_00300.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 3D-printed bodyform full-bucket seat\" width=\"200\" height=\"93\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 3D-printed material can be made in any colour imaginable.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Colour aside, the new 3D-printed bodyform driver\u2019s seat will also add a new design element inside, plus it will reduce the car\u2019s curb weight, and even provide \u201cpassive climate control,\u201d the latter feature thanks to the seat\u2019s unique sandwich construction method. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The base support is made from expanded polypropylene (EPP), and this gets bonded to a \u201cbreathable comfort layer consisting of a mixture of polyurethane-based materials,\u201d says Porsche. The outer skin is made out of \u201cRacetex,\u201d and boasts a perforation pattern that provides inherent climate control, while window panels expose the coloured lattice structure for a thoroughly new appearance. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2902\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2902\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2902\" src=\"https:\/\/articles.carcostcanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/inline_porsche_3d_printed_seats_00400.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 3D-printed bodyform full-bucket seat\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2902\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This closeup shot makes it easy to understand why these seats are breathable.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe seat is the interface between the human and the vehicle, and is thus important for precise, sporty handling,\u201d said Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche. \u201cThat\u2019s why personalized seat shells customized for the driver have been standard in race cars for a long time now.
