CarCostCanada's May 2018 Top 10 Vehicles Sold Report

Canada's Top 10 Selling New Cars

Passenger car sales continued to decline during May 2018, on a positive note the decline did not accelerate. Light truck sales are just under 5% greater than last years tally for the first five months of the year. Combined passenger car and light truck sales are just over 1400 units ahead of the first five months of 2017. Domestic manufactures are likely to continue attempting to lure buyers with aggressive incentives during the coming summer months. Fiat Chrysler sales have been under significant downward pressure throughout each month of this year. Their year to date sales are down over 12,000 units. Hopefully the new 2019 Ram Pickup will give sales a lift. During May 2018, only Ford, Fiat Chrysler and Hyundai + Kia saw their sales decline when compared to the same period last year. General Motors (GM) saw the reported the largest increase in sales, followed by VW Group. GM is now almost three thousand units ahead of Ford in the year to date sales race. It will be interesting to see how the recent announcement to stop selling almost every car in its current lineup will affect Ford’s prospects in the future. The ratio of new car sales to light truck sales at the Big Three domestic manufacturers is currently 6.5% at Fiat Chrysler, 12% at Ford and 23% at General Motors. Clearly Ford is hoping it will make up the lost passenger car sales by selling additional light trucks. To achieve this objective, it will have to attract buyers to vehicles like the EcoSport and the new Bronco.
