Buying a 2012 Mazda Mazda5, and saving $1000 off of MSRP.
It was easy to negotiate the price using Car Cost Canada. I added 3% to the Dealer cost, and the HST to show the dealer what we were willing to pay. The dealer accepted it right away. It could have been because it was in February. Communication after the sale was poor though. The dealer did not contact us with the date and time we could pick up the vehicle. We had to keep after them for that. Other than the poor communication, the service was great.
We always check the lemonaid guide before looking at cars. We also test drive the cars with everything it will be carrying. In this case we asked to put our camping gear in the back, to make sure it fit. The dealerships we went to had no problem letting us do this.
We purchased our vehicle in February, so most dealerships seem to be tripping over themselves to be helpful.
Buying a 2011 Mazda CX-7, and saving $1500 off of MSRP.
It was a good idea to try different cars to narrow down to what brand and model you were most interested in. I also consulted my garage/mechanic as to what brand was good, and he rejected totally one of the cheap Korean brands for lack of parts availability, and long term reliability. Once we had decided on a brand and model, we brought our Car Cost report in, and went to the sales manager (since he is the final arbitrater for the price), made our offer after we presented the Car Cost report to him. He verfied his numbers and accepted our deal. It stopped all the back and forth dickering, and made the negotiations run smoothly and efficiently. When you present your offer, start with the 3%, but also do your calculation up to 5%, and know what your absolute maximum amount will be. If they can't do it, be prepared to walk out, and find another dealer.

The dealer knew we meant business when we presented the numbers from Car Cost Canada. Our offer was accepted without a lot of extra negotating that we have experienced before.

I talked to the sales rep and tested the car without mentioning the carcostcananda report. Ask them the best price and then ask them if they will work on the carcostcanada report pricing. All the dealerships are willing to work with it. Honda dealers said they will add about 7% above the wholesale price. Mazda dealer offers is only 560 dollar above the wholesale price.
It is much easier to negotiate with the carcostcanada report,no back and forth signing. Just ask them what is their acceptable profit margin for them.It made my purchasing much faster and easier.
