CarCostCanada's December 2018 Top 10 Vehicles Sold Report

It was a good year, but are there clouds on the horizon? Actually the clouds were there for some time. Passenger car sales have been on the decline for several months and December 2018 saw that trend continue, all be it at a lower rate than in recent months. The overall market for 2018 still saw over two million passenger cars and light trucks sold. The actual number was 2,003,506, this represented a decline of almost two percent compared to 2017. Passenger car sales declined by eight percent. Light truck sales increased by less than one percent to 1,409,034. For December 2018 the top twelve car makers all suffered declines in their sales. Ford Motor Company and General Motors suffered the steepest declines, of twenty five percent and almost twenty nine percent respectively. It is noteworthy that for December 2018, Toyota outsold GM by over two thousand units. The GM Sierra and Silverado pick up trucks both saw significant sales declines during December 2018. Did the announcement of the impending closure of the Oshawa assembly plant have anything to do with General Motors dismal sales? On the other hand, the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla both reported sales increases of over fifty percent.
